MSc Opportunity - Metapelites in SW Nova Scotia

Project Summary: The metasedimentary rocks of the Meguma terrane in southwestern Nova Scotia exhibit variations in metamorphic mineral assemblages, recording a complex interplay between the chemically heterogeneous sedimentary protoliths and changing pressure-temperature conditions. However, these factors have not been sufficiently disentangled throughout the region, complicating interpretations of the tectonic history. In the Shelburne, NS area, excellent outcrop exposure along several kilometres of shoreline allows for a detailed investigation of the distribution and significance of different metamorphic assemblages.

The student will conduct field mapping of metamorphic rocks and petrographic analysis of thin sections from sampled lithologies. Laboratory work will include use of Saint Mary’s University in-house facilities (lapidary lab, scanning electron microscope, micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometer) and external labs for chemical analysis of rocks and minerals. The student will be trained in and employ thermodynamic modelling software to investigate the evolution of the metamorphic rocks.

The ideal candidate has completed a BSc Honours in Earth Science and has a strong interest in petrology. Completion of an undergraduate metamorphic petrology course is a requirement. Research experience in metamorphic petrology and/or experience with any of the research methods listed above is considered an asset, but not essential. Expected start date is January 2026, however other start dates may be discussed.

Potential candidates should email Jillian Kendrick (jillian.kendrick@smu.ca) and include their:

-   unofficial transcript

-    research interests

-    details of any relevant experience
